The Road Starts Here: NTX Unlimited Week 1 Preview
The lights are on, the schedule is locked in, and everybody thinks they’re going to shock the league. A common theme amongst every team.
NTX Unlimited officially kicks off Week 1 with a slate full of heavy favorites, hungry underdogs, new faces, and teams already talking playoff football before a single snap has been played. From championship expectations to teams just trying to prove they belong, this season is shaping up to be one of the more competitive starts we’ve seen.
The biggest headline entering Week 1 revolves around the league’s projected powerhouses: UNLEASHED and Dipz & Drip. UNLEASHED enters the season looking like the most complete roster in the league, opening as massive favorites against both Tha Gang and SBM. Kevin Dickens continues to build one of the deepest organizations in NTX Unlimited, and year after year his teams find ways to dominate on both sides of the ball. There are very few visible weaknesses on this roster, which is exactly why many around the league are expecting them to flirt with a near perfect season.
Dipz & Drip finds themselves in that same conversation. Projected as one of the top teams in the league, Dipz & Drip opens the year against both Whip Up and Bless Bros with double digit expectations already attached to their name. The talent is undeniable, but Week 1 will immediately test whether they can live up to the pressure of being hunted every single week. They have 8 Man MVP - Jerell Norton at the helm and it is hard to even consider a weakness on a team that he is playing on! He elevates every person on the field when he's on heading the Quarterback position and we expect nothing less coming into this 5 Man season.
You can make a case at Tha Gang also being amongst the Top 3 in elite conversations. Coming off of a 1 seed playoff visit in 8 man, most recently, they head into this season with the same rosters and the same expectations: to dominate. Will we see the same names replicate their successes from 8 Man to 5 Man? It's just a pipe dream right now, but could quickly become reality. QuaShawn Gray and CO. have the chemistry, they've won the games together, now it is time to translate that into this new league season!
One team that believes the projections are disrespectful is TMTR. After being projected at just 4.5 wins, TMTR is entering the season with something to prove, especially on defense. Dee Ward made it clear the team is embracing the criticism.
“I feel disrespected we're only projected 4.5 wins. We're good for 6 wins and top 3 in the league now that we have the help on defense that we need.”
TMTR has historically leaned on offensive firepower, simply because their defenses haven't looked great in the past outside of LDerric Leonard's DPOY performance in 8 Man, but this season they believe their defense can finally become the backbone of a legitimate contender. Their Week 1 matchup against CLOVR will give us an early glimpse into whether that confidence is real or just offseason talk.
Another team entering the year with a massive chip on its shoulder is The Rejects. Built primarily through free agency, The Rejects are attempting something rarely seen in NTX Unlimited: turning a group of overlooked players into a championship contender. Led by Fred McDonald at quarterback, they immediately face a major challenge against Immortals in Week 1. Anthony Santana, backup quarterback for The Rejects, says the low expectations only motivated the team further.
“I understand why we're not expected to do much this season. I haven't personally played Flag Football in 2 years, but the projection for our season wins lit a fire in our team and we're looking to make a deep playoff run.”
If chemistry develops quickly, The Rejects could become one of the season’s biggest surprises. The guys they have are confident in their abilities we just have to see that translate from the group chat to the football field.
Then there’s The Practice Squad. One of the newest teams entering the DFW scene, The Practice Squad is embracing the grind from day one. They may not have the biggest names on paper, but what they do have is energy, effort, and a willingness to learn. Captain Alejandro Esparza kept things realistic while still believing his team can surprise people.
“We're definitely a team that could end up going 0-8, but we're looking to shock some people and win a lot more games than expected.”
He also emphasized that growth will define their season.
“It's definitely going to be a learning season for us, but it all depends on us and how we approach our games.”
Their Week 1 matchup against CLOVR will immediately test how quickly the new squad can adjust to NTX Unlimited competition.
Cam Whiteside - QB of TMTR is quoted saying "We're looking to put 40 on them, no disrespect, just a welcome to the league moment for them and a momentum builder for us"
Bless Bros is another storyline everybody will be watching closely. The organization has built a reputation north of the league as a consistent contender, but this will be their first season competing in NTX Unlimited. Expectations are already high despite the unknowns. Whether they come out swinging or stumble early, most people still expect Bless Bros to eventually become one of the top seeds in the standings.
And then there’s Whip Up. Projected for just 1.5 wins this season, they’re entering the year with almost nothing to lose and absolutely no fear. Unfortunately for them, their opening slate includes games against two of the league’s strongest teams. Still, Shemar Gyce says the team fully expects to exceed expectations immediately.
“We expect to beat that line in Week 1. It's time we shock some folks!”
It’s a bold statement considering the schedule, but early season football has a way of creating chaos when nobody truly knows what teams will look like yet.
That’s what makes Week 1 special. Right now, every team believes they can make noise. Every roster believes they found the missing pieces. Every locker room believes the projections are wrong. Eventually, reality settles in. The standings level out. Pretenders fade and contenders separate themselves.
But for now, it’s anybody’s league.
